Painted Strips (30x40in, oil)
The zebra offers a symbolic duality of light and dark, white and black. It’s a pattern to confuse the predators, but only in the conformity of other zebras, never alone does it stand to be an advantage for survival. Yet it’s easy to make wrong assumption of purpose for stripes, as we often fail to understand our own skin colors. This is illustrated with the dripping white paint, because zebra is actually black with white stripes.

The Coming of Winter (30x40in, oil)
The coming winter brings dancing of snowflakes on top of all life. The complicated detailed snowflakes disassociate on the spirit of this old master of the winter. Let it come, he says, and the attire is complete to conquer this season.

Vanishing Code (30x40in, oil)
The great tuskers, named for having very large, long tusks, are slowly disappearing through an unnatural selection. Poaching is eliminating the gene pool of long tusk elephants, hence the genetics for shorter tusks are passed. Vanishing Codes is a celebration of the natural world, an exploration of beauty, strength, and fragility of life.

Facing Thunder (48x48in, oil)
I’ve done many rhino paintings over the years, with 100’s of photos that I’ve detailing the complexity of the skin folds. For a successful piece, the relative size of the folds to the overall size of the animal needs to be correct. The values of the skin fold shadows must be accurate to the overall mass shadows of the animal, in relative values and intensity. For these reasons, I enjoy capturing these massive animals repeatedly without losing interest.

In Search Of (24x36, oil)
“In Search Of” follows a mother polar bear with two large cubs finding firm ice sheets for seal hunting. Even during the Arctic winter, satellites show there is less sea ice now than during the early 80’s. In the spring, the ice is breaking up sooner and forming later in the fall, forcing bears to expend huge amounts of energy swimming long distances to reach seal populations. A study confirmed one female bear swimming 426 miles for 9 days. The bears were painted based on studies of a polar bear named Inuka of the Singapore zoo. Painted in oil over hand stretched Belgian linen, the composition was designed with flow of shapes and values in mind.
